Asian American Architects/Engineers AssociationCalifornia Institute of the Arts - Associate Vice President for Capital Facility PlanningJob Location: California Institute of the ArtsJob Status: Full-TimeJob Description / Primary Objective:California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), a highly regarded, nationally ranked independent multidisciplinary arts institution, seeks a dynamic and collaborative Associate Vice President for Capital Facilities Planning to provide expert leadership in the ongoing development of its campus.The Position:The Associate Vice President of Capital Facilities Planning (AVP) reports to the Senior Vice President of Finance and Administration and Chief Financial Officer (SVPFA/CFO), Lori Husein. The AVP serves as a leader on campus and in CalArts’ broader communities responsible for advancing the physical development of facilities that enable education, performance, administration, and the housing, dining, and living programs that sustain its students and faculty. The AVP is responsible for the strategy and day-to-day direction and supervision of all CalArts’ capital facilities planning needs. The scope of this work includes the management of both the project planning and the design for all major and minor capital projects, including remodel, renovation, and new constructions. The AVP further ensures that the planning and design of all capital projects are functional, environmentally sustainable, appropriately scoped, well-designed, and cost-effective. In tandem, the AVP will support and provide expert guidance to the Vice President for Facilities Development and Management (VPFDM) on issues concerning construction project management.The AVP is the operational lead in the development of a new capital facility master plan, the first since the Institute’s inception, and subsequent triannual progress reviews and updates to the plan once it is formed. As CalArts’ chief design official and building official, this position maintains CalArts’ aesthetic standards and regulatory and agency code compliance. The AVP also serves as CalArts’ liaison with the City of Santa Clarita, City of Los Angeles, and County of Los Angeles Facilities Planning and Utilization units.Currently, the AVP provides leadership for and supervision of 1 FTE as well as CFP contractors and contributes to the effective performance of staff under the VPFDM. The CFP team will grow as more funding becomes available through various channels including philanthropy. Additionally, the AVP will support the development and management of an annual capital budget that is expected to be approximately $10M and will complete the investment of a $40M bond.To Apply:CalArts has engaged Opus Search Partners to support the recruitment of this position. Qualified women and people of color are especially encouraged to apply.Requirements (Education, Level of Experience, etc.):Minimum Qualifications:A bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or a related technical field.Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, and disability backgrounds of college students and employees.10+ years of capital facilities planning and development experience.The ability to interact and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders including community leaders and local and state public officials.The ability to handle multiple complicated challenges with balance and insight.A record of collaborating across teams to achieve goals and innovate new solutions and of managing in a way that prioritizes innovation, learning, independence, and growth and that leaves room for mistakes.The ability to work alongside professionals in a wide variety of functions and areas of expertise to achieve successful outcomes.Proven excellence as a financial steward; a record of managing projects in ways that allow the flexibility to make corrections or shift directions, if needed.Working knowledge of facilities and familiarity with safety management in a complex organization. Experience integrating technology into facilities projects.The ability to establish mission and goals at the macro level and to lead managers to develop goals in alignment with mission.Demonstrated commitment to equity and ability to foster a community with a culture of inclusiveness that holds its members accountable for creating, supporting, and championing diversity and the expansion of opportunity.Preferred Qualifications:Arts-facility project management experience.A graduate degree.5+ years of leadership experience.Experience in leading similar areas of responsibility at a major university or relevant leadership experience in private business.Demonstrated experience using data and analytics to drive decision-making.Fundraising skills and mindset. The ability to collaborate closely with advancement departments to compel donors with a future vision. The interpersonal skill to influence donor decisions one-on-one and through written plans.
